Attribution in Adobe Experience Platform (AEP)
Understanding Attribution Approaches: marketing impact on performance and media planning.
Attribution isn’t just a reporting task—it’s a strategic capability that helps to optimize both the customer journey and marketing investment. To do that, we need to go beyond looking at conversions in isolation.
Adobe Customer Journey Analytics - Connecting Touchpoints into Unified Customer Journeys
First, we need the ability to analyse journeys in detail. With Customer Journey Analytics, we can stitch together online and offline interactions into a single event-level view.
With its ability to link customer identity and tracks each step of the customer journey sequentially across channels, devices, and time, Customer Journey Analytics gives you a complete contextual map of engagement paths, revealing deeper, previously unreachable insights.
This enables us to:
- Understand how customers move through awareness, consideration, conversion, and retention.
- Identify what influences them, where drop-offs occur, and which touchpoints drive action.
- Explore engagement not just at a channel or campaign level, but also across products, content, and audiences.
- Apply different attribution models (first touch, last touch, algorithmic, custom) directly in CJA to compare perspectives on contribution and do tactical optimizations in campaigns, channels and/or content.
- Reduce IT queues and expedite report processing speeds with self-serve capabilities that let users explore and immediately adapt reporting to answer evolving business questions
Unlike traditional channel-centric reporting, CJA’s event-level granularity powers exploratory analysis that reveals opportunities to improve customer experiences and optimize journeys and marketing performance
Adobe Mix Modeler - Harmonizing Econometrics and User-Level Insights
While CJA helps analyse and optimize customer journeys, we also need to step back and ask strategic, investment-level questions. This is where Adobe Mix Modeler (AMM) comes in.
AMM unifies attribution and econometric modeling to deliver data-driven budget allocation, forecasting, and scenario planning.
AMM works with both aggregated and event level data across channels, markets, and timeframes to quantify the drivers of overall performance. You can incorporate key factors relevant to diverse lines of business, regions, and new products — such as macroeconomic data, regional price indices, or promotion calendars — as built-in AI and ML train the model on your data and business goals.
In AMM we ingest and consolidate data with user-friendly connectors that link data fields, marketing channels, and touchpoints across data sets. This lets you support normalized and reliable channel attribution measurement.
It helps us to evaluate the incremental effectiveness of the paid, owned, and earned marketing channels — online and offline. So, we can answer high-level questions such as: What is the incremental value of TV vs. search vs. social? How should we allocate budget across channels? What’s the long-term impact of brand-building vs. short-term sales activation?
Adobe Mix Modeler doesn’t treat Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) and Multi-Touch Attribution (MTA) as competing approaches. Instead, it unifies them:
- MMM (aggregated data) captures macro effects such as seasonality, media saturation, and long-term brand lift.
- MTA (customer stitched event-level data from Adobe Experience Platform) quantifies contributions of specific interactions and sequences.
- Through bi-transfer learning, AMM allows insights to flow both ways—bringing consistency between tactical attribution and strategic planning.
With Mix Modeler, you can quickly generate, compare, and adjust multiple marketing budget plans to forecast results in varying scenarios — empowering your team to make more confident and expedited marketing investment decisions.
Better Together: Adobe Customer Journey Analytics + Adobe Mix Modeler
In short, with Customer Journey Analytics we can explain how experiences drive conversions. With Adobe Mix Modeler answers “what next” in budget allocation and media planning for growth.
Together, they give marketers the full lens, tactical optimization and strategic planning in Adobe Experience Platform.
This is where Adobe stands apart. Most vendors and agencies stop at either digital channel analytics or stand-alone mix modeling. The challenges are:
- Digital channel data is not customer journey data. It shows activity in silos (web interactions). What if the customer has been impacted by an Influencers campaign, downloads the app but buys In-Store? Those journeys vanish in digital channel solutions.
- Digital channel, like disconnected web and app views signals, can’t properly feed mix modeling models.
Adobe solves this gap with Adobe Experience Platform (AEP) as a common data foundation:
- Identity-resolved, event-level data across web, app, CRM, call center, and offline retail creates a true omnichannel journey view.
- Standardized connectors and data models streamline the flow of information directly into Customer Journey Analytics and Mix Modeler.
- This ensures attribution and mix modeling work from the same high-quality foundation, not disconnected datasets.
The result: only Adobe provides a unified, end-to-end measurement system that connects customer journey optimization with macro-level investment planning.
